(4x^7 - x + 6) - (x^7 + 3)
4x^7 - x + 6 - x^7 - 3 ... distribute
Now combine like terms
OpenStudy (anonymous):
are 4x^7 and x^7 like terms? @jim_thompson5910
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
yes
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
so are the +6 and -3
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Now when you combine do you leave the numbers that cannot be combinded at the END of the equation? @jim_thompson5910

or you can place them wherever you want, just don't combine them with other terms
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
for instance, -x and 6 are NOT like terms so you don't combine them to get -5x or -5
you just leave it as -x+6

Ok that helps alot thanks so muchh!! @jim_thompson5910
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
tell me what you got for your answer
OpenStudy (anonymous):
5x^7-3-x ?? O.o @jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
4x^7 - x^7 is NOT 5x^7
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
+6 - 3 is NOT -3
OpenStudy (anonymous):
X is 1 right? @jim_thompson5910
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
what do you mean
OpenStudy (anonymous):
4 + another x would make 5 x's @jim_thompson5910

Oh wait... were subtracting it would be 3x^7 @jim_thompson5910
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
but it's not 4x^7 + x^7
it's 4x^7 - x^7
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
yes
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
+6 - 3 is equal to +3
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
so
4x^7 - x + 6 - x^7 - 3
turns into
3x^7 - x + 3
