If I was using y2 - y1, and my y1 was negative, lets say I have 3 and -5, I'd have 3 - (-5), which becomes 3 + 5, right?

See I have : y = mx + c m =slope, c = y intercept Now, as you found slope (m) = \(\cfrac{3}{2}\) . I will put that in the equation y = mx + c \(y = \cfrac{3}{2} x + c\) Let us put , x = 8 and y = 4 (these coordinates are given to us) \(8 = \cfrac{3}{2} (4) + c\) Find "c" from here . Can you?
