if you are connecting two resistances in series of 5 ohms each your equivalent resistance will be \[R=R _{1}+R _{2}=5+5=10 \Omega\] and if connected in parallel then \[R=\frac{ R _{1} R _{2} }{ R _{1}+R _{2}}=\frac{ 5*5 }{ 5+5 }=2.5 \Omega\]
