0.144g of an aluminium compound X react with an excess of water, to produce a gas. This gas burns completely in O2 to form H2O and 72cm^3 of CO2 only. The volume of CO2 was measured at room temperature and pressure. What could be the formula of X? A) Al2C3 B) Al3C4 C) Al4C3 D) Al5C3

OpenStudy (aaronq):

72 cm^3 of CO2 is your only source of carbon, find how many moles this is. you started with 0.144g AlyCx .. so find which formula has the same amount (moles) of carbon as the 72 cm^3 CO2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if we calculate the moles of aluminium compound using C option, then it's 0.144/144=0.001 moles then, what will be the amount(moles) of carbon in it? 3*0.001??

OpenStudy (aaronq):

yep, exactly. is that the same amount as the 72 cm^3 of CO2 gas?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yes thanks :)
