Find the area of the shaded sector below.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Find the area of the circle and divide it by 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hint: The answer is 9pi/6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Where did you get the 9 and 6 from ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Find the area of the circle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 4.71

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In terms of pi

OpenStudy (anonymous):

47.1 ? -__ -

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i don't know actually.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Your answer will be cPI, where c is a number.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Remember the area of a circle is pi*r^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9.42 for cPI and 11309.73 for pi*r^2 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For r would i use the degree or the number ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what does r stand for in the equation for the area of a circle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

radius correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep so square the radius and then multiply that by pi then divide that by the region of the circle it is which is 1/6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9pi/6 = 4.71

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes sir

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh i forgot to ask would it be cm square or cm ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Also do i always divide by 6 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh you got 6 by dividing 360 by 60 right

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

60 degrees is 60/360 = 1/6 of a full revolution (360 degrees) so the area of the sector will be 1/6 of the area of the full circle so that's why you're dividing by 6 (in this case)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay i think i get it now, can i put another question up and you tell me if i solved it right ?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you basically find the area of the full circle (using A = 2pi*r) then you divide by 6 sure go for it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hold on do i add square cm or just cm to 4.71 ?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

linear units are units like inches, centimeters, etc

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

they measure distance and length

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

area units are units like square inches, square centimeters, and so on

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so you add on square cm (not just cm)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank i was getting confused with that (:

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

np

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

^ that would be 6cm2 or would i just be 6 cm ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it *

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the area is in square meters (given) so the area stays in square meters (unless you convert)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so 6 m^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

THis is the last one.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

find the total area multiply it by 275/360, since you're taking only this fraction of the area (and not the whole thing)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 1.31

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

way too small

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No i got that for 275/360 ahahaha

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

oh, that should be some number less than 1 then

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you divided in the wrong order

OpenStudy (anonymous):

360/275 = 1.31

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that one right ?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

flip the fraction, the 275 should be on top

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh 0.76

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yep 275/360 = 0.763888 then you take that result and multiply it with the total area of the circle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

64*0.76*Pi

OpenStudy (anonymous):

152.73 would be my answer

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes approximately

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

a closer approximation is 153.511111111111

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the difference is due to round-off error

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

and the fact that pi is approximate in itself

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh right the hundredths place is the third right or is it the four i'm really slow today -__ -

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

it goes tenths hundredths thousandths ten-thousandths ... ... so it's the second digit after the decimal point

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Left or right, sorry you must think i lack brain cells.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ahahaha you answered it, i'm really not getting anything today it's on the right

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

that's ok, just take things one step at a time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay i'm going to try to solve this one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

145/360 = 0.40 * 3.14 * 3.7squared

OpenStudy (anonymous):

17.2 square cm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

inches *

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you round to 2 places (not 1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

17.3 inches ?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

2 decimal places (ie 2 digits after the decimal point)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

19.20 inches

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you should have gotten (145/360)*3.14*3.7^2 = 17.3140472222222 = 17.31

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so 17.31 is what they're looking for

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh you just multiply 3.7 by two i thought i had to multiply it by itself .

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

3.7^2 means 3.7*3.7

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

it means 3.7 squared 3.7^2 = 3.7 squared

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if i wanted to say "3.7 times 2" then I would write 3.7 * 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I did it how you said to do it but i got 17.20

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

hmm

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

maybe you typed it differently

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay you know how you divide 146 by 360 how many numbers after 0. i'm suppose to use i only use two after 0. example 0.10 get me ?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

i think so

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so instead of using 0.40277777777778 you can only use 0.40

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then i don't know why i'm getting it wrong, maybe i'm not meant to pass geometry.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what answer is it saying is wrong?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No but i'm not getting what you get so i'm obviously doing something wrong.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

well I just typed it all at once

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

instead of breaking it up

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

i typed all of (145/360)*3.14*3.7^2 at once

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

don't forget to round to two places

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OH ! i don't do that, how brain dead of me.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes i finally got it !!! 17.314

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

well you want 2 dec places

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which makes it 17.31

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know i was just trying to show you that i finally got it down, thank you so much you basically brought me back from hell and that i will never forget.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

geometry isn't hell, so I didn't bring you back from there lol

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

but I can see how it's tough

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can it be because i'm stressing that i'm not get the things right away ?
