oxidation state
what is the oxidation state of Cr? |dw:1370782773235:dw|
can you explain how to get the answer
@.Sam.
4 atoms of oxygen and one atom of Cr. The charge is 2- So if u arrange this into an equation x+ 4 x -2= 0 therefor x + -8= o x= 8
the answer is supposed to be Cr is 6+
i just dont understand why
yaa it oxidation state is +6
Oh i got it The overall charge is -2 of the compound and seperate -2 for oxygen atom So the overall equation will be X x 4-2= -2 x= -2+8 x= +6
Cr + 4(-2) =-2 Cr-8=-2 Cr=-2+8 =+6
but i thought neutral compounds are supposed to equal 0? no?
@chmvijay
yaaa but its not neutral here
yaa u have to consider than =0 for neutral molecules :) ur right
is it because its a transition metal and non metal?
is not neutral?@chmvijay
see CrO4-2 is not neutral but N2aCrO4 is neutral then you can claulate like this 2(+1) +Cr +4(-2) =0 2+Cr+-8 =0 Cr=+8-2 =6
it is nothing to do with ur transition metal and non metal
hey did u get it or noo :)any problem still scratching your head :)
so is there an easier way to identify when it is neutral or not@chmvijay?
yaaa neutral mean the over all compound should not bear any charge like Na2CrO4 here in this compound no charge over all can u make it out now where as CrO4-2 as it is bearing total -2 charge
got it thank u!
you are welcome :)
