The measures of two supplementary angles are in the ratio 2:7. What are the degree measures of the two angles?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The measures of two supplementary angles are in the ratio 2:3. Find their measures. Step 1. Let 2x be one angle and 3x be the other angle. The ratio of these two angles is 2x/3x=2/3 as given on the problem. Step 2. The two angles must add up to 180 degrees by definition. Step 3. Then 2x+3x=180 or 5x=180 which implies that x=36. 2x=72 and 3x=108 Step 4. The angles are then 72 degrees and 108 degrees. Note the two angles add up to 180 and their ratio is 72/108=2/3 satisfying the problem statement.

I'm terrible at math can we work this out step by step together?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

give me just one sec i need to finish my homework first

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright please help as soon as you can

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh i got this, it has to add to 180 so 2x+7x=180

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so x must be 20 thus the angles are 40 and 140

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do you know that x=20?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wouldn't the angles be 85.5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2x+7x=180 right? so 9x=180 so x=20... the two angle 2x=40(deg) 7x=140(deg)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ah Im sorry but im so lost. I get where the nine comes from but where does the 20 come from?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2x would be 72, 3x would be 108 add those two together you get 180

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which one is right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

umm well neuronerd has the right idea but the way he calculated it im not to sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well about his anyway

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Zak, why are you using a 2:3 ratio? For mumford's 2:7 ratio lets break it down- the first angle is 2 times some number x the second angle is 7 times some number x the definition of supplementary is that the angle add to give 180 degrees so since the we figure out the two angle are 2x and 7x then 2x+7x=180 Do you agree with this? at this point do some simple algebra to get 9x=180 and simply to x=20 thus 2x=2*20=40 and 7x=7*20=140 make sure this is right because the resulting numbers should follow the same ratio 2:7 same as 40:140, so this is your check that you got the correct answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for a 2:3 ratio of supplementary angles, the correct answer is 72:108 since 5x=180 x=32 36*2= 72 32*3=108

Sounds good to me thanks:)
