What effect does adding a non volatile solute to a pure solvent have on the melting point?
it will lower it
melting or boiling point :)
melting point of a solvent????????? i think it's boiling point not melting point chemvijay is right.
both melting and boiling points are affected by the addition of a solute to a solvent. Boiling points are elevated, and melting points are lowered. That's why salt is put on icy sidewalks in winter
Your answer is partially correct , but - NaCl (aq) would destroy the surrounding living environment @JFraser , as is proved when the tide comes in further than normal .(ex. Super Storm Sandy) . Therefore CaCl is used instead , the calcium chloride actually provides nutrients to the surrounding living environment and acts as a fertilizer.
I never said "table salt", but \(CaCl_2\) is the salt used for sidewalks, not \(NaCl\)
So Whats the answer?
