hexadecimal is base 16, so the numbers in each place go 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A B C D E F the place values are 1 16 256 4096 65536 etc. #22ad7f is a hexadecimal number — both the presence of a,d,f and the leading # tell you that. I take it the problem is to convert it to the base 10 representation?

hexadecimal is base 16 ... digits go from 0 to F based on 4 bits ....place values 0001 = 1 0010 = 2 0100 = 4 1000 = 8 1111 --> 15 or F 1010 --> 10 or A

Your place values are: 2*16^5 = 2*1048576 2*16^4 = 2*65536 a*16^3= 10*4096 d*16^2 = 13*256 7*16^1 = 7*16 f*16^0 = 15*1 add them up and you've got your value, base 10.

@dumbcow gave an excellent explanation of the binary underpinnings. another variation is "octal" or base 8, which is not used so frequently now. There the bits come in groups of 3, values 0-7.

Yes, base^0 = 1 (base cannot equal 0).
