N2 has zero oxidation state and H2 have zero oxidation state, since both occur as natural elements.. Or you may say both elements have atoms of the same electronegativity. when ammonia is formed, N is more electronegative than H so it reduces in oxidation state to -3 and since H is less electronegative, each H gains a +1 oxidation state.
gain in oxidation state is oxidation, reduce in oxidation state is reduction
