why is the element formed with phorphorus and oxygen : diphosphorus dioxygen? shoudn't it be diphosphorus trioxygen , since the ion charges get switched?

OpenStudy (missmob):

it should be diphosphorus pentoxide

OpenStudy (missmob):

becuase The chemical annotation for phosphorus is P, whilst for oxygen it is O. The molecular formula for the chemical compound diphosphorus pentoxide is P4 O10. Therefore, the balanced equation for Phosphorus + Oxygen > Diphosphorus Pentoxide is P4 + 5 O2 > P4 O10.

well?

Ok thanks for your help. although im doing gr 10 science and didnt leanr about annotations yet

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i mean P has an ion charge of -3, and O a charge of -2,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so wouldnt they get switched around when wrting the names?

OpenStudy (missmob):

no

OpenStudy (missmob):

- means it gains electrons right i dont think so they wont switsh names

OpenStudy (missmob):
