find the surface area of the cylinder with radius 4 and height 10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Think of it as a net, with the rectangular " middle part" and the two cross-sections, the sum of the surface areas of these three = total surface area of the cylinder

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the sum of the surface areas of the cross-sections are 2(pi x radius x radius) = 2(3.14 x 4 x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2( 3.14 x 4 x 4) *

OpenStudy (anonymous):

these are the answer a) 276.32 units² b) 351.68 units² c) 502.4 units² d) 3140 units

We know that the height of the rectangle is 10. The base is equal to the circumference of the circular cross-sections, eg. 3.14 x 8, ( being the diameter), so the area of the rectangular section is 10(3.14 x 8), or 3.14x 80. Add the results together; 2(3.14 x 4 x 4) + (3.14 x 80) = total surface area

OpenStudy (sarahann):

b is the answer.
