OpenStudy (babyslapmafro):

Please help me simplify the following radical. (click to see)

OpenStudy (babyslapmafro):

\[\sqrt{e ^{2x}+e ^{-2x}+2}\]

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

let \(e^{2x} = a\)

OpenStudy (babyslapmafro):

\[\sqrt{a+\frac{ 1 }{ a }+2}\]

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

\(\sqrt{a +\frac{1}{a}+2}\)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

yes take lcd and group into a single fraction

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

\(\large \sqrt{\frac{a^2+1 + 2a}{a}}\)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

see that, numerator is a perfect square

OpenStudy (babyslapmafro):

why isn't (1/a) multiplied by (a/a) as well?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

i dont need to cuz, i already hav a in the bottom

OpenStudy (babyslapmafro):

oh right

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

good :) try to simplify now

OpenStudy (babyslapmafro):

i needed to simplify this radical in order to find the arc length of a parametric curve...im in calc iii and my algebra is pathetic.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

its okay, see next steps :- \(\large \sqrt{\frac{a^2+1 + 2a}{a}}\) \(\large \sqrt{\frac{(a+1)^2}{a}}\)

OpenStudy (babyslapmafro):

ya i can go from here..thanks

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

\(\large \frac{(a+1)}{\sqrt{a}}\)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

\(\large \frac{(e^{2x}+1)}{\sqrt{e^{2x}}}\)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

\(\large \frac{(e^{2x}+1)}{e^{x}}\)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

\(\large e^x - \frac{1}{e^{x}}\)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

simplifies to this :)

OpenStudy (babyslapmafro):

why is the second term subtracted from the first here: \[\large e^x - \frac{1}{e^{x}}\]

OpenStudy (babyslapmafro):

@ganeshie8

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

\(\large \frac{(e^{2x}+1)}{e^{x}}\)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

\(\large \frac{e^{2x}}{e^{x}} + \frac{1}{e^{x}} \)

OpenStudy (babyslapmafro):

right so then it should be: \[e ^{x}+\frac{ 1 }{ e^x }\] right?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

oops ! you're right !!!! i had a typo there sorry :/

OpenStudy (babyslapmafro):

no problem

OpenStudy (babyslapmafro):

thanks for the help

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

you're wlcme :) good luck wid calc :D
