Calculate the energy needed to change 200.0 g of ice from -20.0 º C to water at 35.0 ºC.

OpenStudy (turingtest):

I do feel that I remember that 1 Joule of energy raises 1 gram of water by 1 degree C. You may want to double-check that, but can you see how you might approach the answer given that information?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it would take 200 J to raise the 200g 1 degree? & I need to raise it 55degrees so would it take 1.1 * 10^4 J?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But my answer needs to be in kcal

OpenStudy (turingtest):

my mistake, 1 calorie is the energy required to raise 1 gram of water by one degree celsius

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it would be 1.1 * 10^4 cal? Making it 11 kcal?

OpenStudy (turingtest):

exactly :)

Okay, thank you!
