Dipole-dipole attraction question! Out of HBr, H2Se, AsH3, and GeH4. Why does GeH4 have the weakest dipole dipole attraction?? :O

OpenStudy (aaronq):

pretty sure GeH4 is tetrahedral so the individual dipoles cancel out, so it wouldn't have a permanent dipole.

OpenStudy (xishem):

Just to elaborate, you might do well to look at the 3D structures of each molecule, and you'll see that GeH4 is the only one which is electrically symmetric: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_bromide http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_selenide http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AsH3 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeH4

OpenStudy (aaronq):

electronically** symmetric :P

OpenStudy (xishem):

^ Yes. :P Typo.
