OpenStudy (xishem):

In inorganic chemistry, a good example of an sp-hybridised atom in a compund is the carbon in carbon dioxide. It's important to note that compounds themselves aren't hybridised, but rather individual atoms within them. In carbon dioxide, for example, while the carbon is sp-hybridised (2 bonds, 0 lone pairs), each oxygen atom is sp2-hybridised (1 bond, 2 lone pairs each). A good example of an organic compound that has sp-hybridised atoms is acetylene. In acetylene (or ethyne), each carbon atom is sp-hybridised (2 bonds, 0 lone pairs). Pictures of the Lewis structures of each compound are attached — there you can see that both compounds are linear around the sp-hybridised atoms (a common feature of sp-hybridised atoms).
