What element is oxidized in the following reaction? HNO3 + Cu Cu(NO3)2 + NO2 + H2O

OpenStudy (xishem):

First, do you know what it means when an atom gets oxidized?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes it means the gaining of electrons

OpenStudy (anonymous):

When an atom is oxidized it means it lost electrons Reduced atoms means they gained electrons

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oxidation >> losing electrons Reduction>> Gaining electrons

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i cant tell which one is being oxidized

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im trying >> i just had a test on this earlier :D idk but i cant tell what happened to HNO2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the options are: H N O Cu
