HELP! http://prntscr.com/1c95l5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

b=4 by pythagorean theorem

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Can you find b?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah i know it is 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its not a cuz you do base * height /2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think its B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know A is not the answer, C is not the answer either

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You have a = 3, b = 4, c = 5. Now look at each choice, and calculate what the choice tells you. See if 15 is the answer to any of the choices.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

D we know the length of side C is 5

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

A. A = bh/2 = 3*4/2 = 6 Not 15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah...

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

B. tan(theta) = opp/adj = a/b = 3/4 Not 15

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

C. Perimeter = a + b + c = 3 + 4 + 5 = 12 Not 15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i think it is D because 5*3 can be 15

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

D. Length of side c = 5 Not 15

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

D. Length of side c is given in the problem as 5. 5 is not 15. You can't just multiply it by a number bec you feel like it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i mean the triangle lengths can be in the form of 9:12: 15 is not so?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

If D were "3 times the length of side c," then 3 * 5 = 15, and D would be the answer. But there is nothing in choice D telling you to multiply c by 3.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

In other words, A through D are not 15. What's left?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

E, so that is the answer !

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Correct!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks you cleared the ambiguity! :)

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You're welcome. Glad to be of help!
