A car with a mass of 1.1 × 10^3 kilograms hits a stationary truck with a mass of 2.3 × 10^3 kilograms from the rear end. The initial velocity of the car is +22.0 meters/second. After the collision the velocity of the car is -11.0 meters/second. What is the velocity of the truck after this elastic collision?

Any help me with a formula? I can solve it after :) Just give me a little explanation.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i believe elastic collision is m1vb + m2vb = m1va+m2va

OpenStudy (amistre64):

a and b denoting velocities after and before the collision

OpenStudy (souvik):

in elastic collision total mechanical energy and linear momentum is conserved..

OpenStudy (amistre64):

vb of m2 is 0 m1vb = m1va+m2va, solving for va of m2 (m1vb - m1va)/m2 = va, with any luck :)

Thank you very Much :) FInally someone helps me out lol :)

youre welcome
