Give the quantum number sets for each electron in the 3p sublevel of a phosphorus (P) atom.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got that l = 1 because that represents the p sublevel, but my question is how does the rest of the notation come in.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why does l = 0 1 and 2?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

For 3 P l =1 Ml =+1 Ms =+1/2 and -1/2 O Ms =+1/2 and -1/2 -1 Ms =+1/2 and -1/2

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

now what is ur question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So l only equals 1?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

l= o for S orbital l=1 for p orbital l=2 for d orbital l=3 for f orbital

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so because it's p, l =1 right?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

yaaaa :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OK so i've got everything except for ms. Is it always +1/2 and -1/2?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

yaa it s always the same thing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok that makes a lot of sense then. Thank you!

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

you are welcome :)
