CATENATION IS A PROPERTY WHICH HELPS CARBON TO FORM SO MUCH COMPOUNDS CATENATION IS ABILITY TO FORM BONDS TO ITSELF

Carbon is in group 4, thus it has 4 valence electrons with the electronic configuration 1s2 2s2, 2p2. However, in an excited state, one of the 2s2 electrons are excited to the 2p2 stage, and the new spdf notation is 1s2 2s1 2p3, thus it allows carbon to form 4 bonds. Besides that, the 2s1 and 2p3 orbitals are hybridized into sp3 hybrid orbitals which are degenerate and has same energy levels.
