Why is carbon is considered tetravalent?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It has a valency of 4 - meaning, it has 4 valent electrons.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This can be clearly seen in CO2. O=C=O It shares 2 electrons with one oxygen atom, and 2 with another oxygen atom. so altogether, it's sharing 4 electrons.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it atomic number is 6 =2,4 so it found in group 4 and period 2 and carbon is non metal so it gain 4 electron to be stable

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. So it gets 2 electrons from one oxygen atom, and 2 from the other oxygen atom. (In CO2). THerefore, altogether it has gained 4 electrons.

thx a lot!!
