a random variable R is normally distributed with a mean of 7 and a standard deviation of 1.5 . Find the value of W so that P (8.8

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

How have you attempted to answer this problem statement.

OpenStudy (kropot72):

First find the z-score for 8.8 as follows: \[z=\frac{8.8-7}{1.5}=1.2\] Now find the cumulative probability for a z-score of 1.2 using a standard normal distribution table. let this value of cumulative probability be\[P _{1}\] Next add 0.0800 to P1 to find \[P _{2}=P _{1}+0.0800\] Now use a standard normal distribution table again to find the z-score relating to a cumulative probability of P2. If this z-score value is denoted as Z2 then \[z _{2}=\frac{W-7}{1.5}............(1)\] After plugging the value found for Z2 into equation (1) the equation can easily be arranged to find the required value of W.
