Find the value of x. a.22.0 b.44.8 c.17.5 d.37.5 https://rialto5819-ehs-pps.gradpoint.com/Resource/2146263,72F,0,0,0,0,0/Assets/testitemimages/geometry_a/similarity/mc100-1.jpg

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

To do this, you would want to do the pythagoream theorm. Do you know how to do the pythagoream theorm?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a2+b2=c2

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Good. So if you think about it, you want to do the pythagoream theorm on the left triangle. After doing that, you would want to perform pythagoream theorm, except this time on the right triangle. Make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes thanks

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Alright. Do you want me to check if your answer is right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[2\sqrt{89}\]

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

That's your final answer?

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

If so, then I don't think that's the answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont know what it is @GoldPhenoix

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats what i got the first time

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

What did you get for the left triangle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[2\sqrt{89}\]

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Lets do it step by step. You plug it in to get: \[\large \large 10^2 + b^2 = 16^2\] Correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2sq.root 39

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[2\sqrt{39} is what i got\]

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Did you do 10^2 + b^2 = 16^2 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Okay. So you simplify it to get: \[\large \large 100 + b^2 = 256\] Correct so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

\[\large \large b^2 = 156\] Correct so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Now you square root it, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Now what do you end up with after square rooting?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got \[2\sqrt{39}\]

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

In standard form please.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont know

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what that means or how to do that

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Use a calculator.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i am and thats what it gave me

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Press the square root button and then 156.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12.4

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Good. Around 12. Now do the pythagoream on the right triangle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

30.4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[4\sqrt{58}\]

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

It's not even close to 30.4. Do you got: \[\large \large b^2 = 640\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

25.2

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Good. That's around a. 22.0. :) I hope this help. If your thinking why you didn't get the exact answer, well it's because we rounded it. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Sorry that it took too long. >_>

Directrix (directrix):

@knowel @GoldPhenoix I got a difference answer. Please check my work. The given triangle is not a right triangle. Use the Triangle Angle Bisector Theorem Triangle Bisector Theorem: If a ray bisects an angle of a triangle, then it divides the opposite side into segments that are proportional to the sides that formed the angle.

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Ohh. My bad. >_<

Directrix (directrix):

10 is to x as 16 is to 28 10/x = 16/28 16x = 280 x = 35/2 = 17.5 --> c.17.5
