Which one has a higher ionization energy? Cl- or Ar? Please explain!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

have you a concept about ionization energy.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I understand the concept of ionization energy, and I know the trend, but it's the -1 that is throwing me off on this question.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

def:ionization energy is a minimum energy require to remove an electron to form isolated gasoues ion. so answer is Ar bcoz it is dificult to remove electron from its shell as its octet is completed(noble gas) and nuclear charge is very high. ionization energy of Ar=1521 and Cl=1251

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Cl- have greater no. of electrons than protons so nuclear charge is low.it is easy to remove foreign electron.

Ohhhh! I understand now! Thank you so much :)

thanks my pleasure
