Please help me!! Pre-Calc Simplify the expression.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay so I tried simplifying it but I'm stuck. I got (1+cot^2)^2/(1+tan^2)^2

OpenStudy (cruffo):

I think I would do this a bit differently than you did. I would use fundamental identities to write this in sin and cos, then simplify the denom to get one frfaction, and then simplify the complex fraction to get 1 :) Would you like me to help you?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes please!

OpenStudy (cruffo):

So let us let the original expression be known as LHS (short for left hand side). We know that \(csc^2(x) = \dfrac{1}{sin^2(x)}\) and that \(sec^2(x) = \dfrac{1}{cos^2(x)}\) Go thru LHS making these substitutions.

OpenStudy (cruffo):

should get \[LHS =\large \frac{\frac{1}{\sin^2(x)}\cdot \frac{1}{\cos^2(x)}}{\frac{1}{\cos^2(x)} + \frac{1}{sin^2(x)}}\]
