How many valence electrons are there in an atom of nitrogen? A. 3 B. 6 C. 4 D. 2 E. 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5

OpenStudy (frostbite):

The number of valence electrons are equal to the main group number. So for nitrogen it would be?

OpenStudy (frostbite):

atleast for the P and S block.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nitrogen is in Group 5A, so is 5 the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (frostbite):

Exactly.

OpenStudy (frostbite):

Another example: oxygen is in main group 6 therefor 6 valance electrons.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Atomic no for nitrogen is 7. That means 7 electrons. 2electrons on first orbit, 5 electrons left for the the valence orbit. Hence 5 valence electrons
