Here's the deal: Since angles BCD and ADC are equal (congruence of triangles) then EC=ED ... 1st congruence item. Since AD=BC (congruence of triangles) we subtract congruence segments ED and EC to get AE = BE (second congruence item) Also, angles AEC and BED are congruent (vertically opposite angles), that supplies the third congruent item, which completes the proof of congruence of triangles ACE and BDE.
