Do you have the list of students, with student numbers? What's the range of the student numbers?

If the student numbers range from 1 to 30, then you can find the student using the random number N as follows: Student number = (N mod 30) + 1 The fifth random number will correspond to the fifth student.

Maybe pick the beginning "59" Multiply 5 and 9 to get 45 and start on value #45 and start assigning values. Assigning values is a little trickier, since individual digits are two few and 2 at a time are two many. Perhaps you can use the flip-a-coin method. 0-4 are Music 5-9 are Otherwise Starting from the 45th digit #1 - 3 - Music #2 - 3 - Music #3 - 8 - Otherwise #4 - 4 - Music #5 - 5 - Otherwise #6 - 4 - Music #7 - 5 - Otherwise There are many ways to proceed. This is just one.

It may be what is required, but I don't like it. The problem is that if 30 students in your class do this experiment, all 30 will get the same result. What's the point of that? Anyway...

Seriously, just put your finger down on the line of numbers and pick the first two digits you see. That's what I did. Multiplying those two gave me the first digit in the 50-digit sequence. When I hit the 50th digit, I started over again at the beginning.

If you randomize the starting point, potentially there could be 50 different answers. If you just start at the beginning, the whole class possibly will get the same answer. This might be easier to grade and may be what the question intends. Hard to tell.

Yes, I got 5*9 = 45 and started with the 45th digit. You may get something else. Where did your finger land?

You have ten groups of five digits. That's 50 digits. Pick number 45.

No more multiplying. The multiplication was just to pick the starting point. After that, encode the digits so that you can make a decision for each participant.

Digit #45 now represents Student #1 which has been assigned "Music". Move on to digit #46 and make a decision for Student #2

Yes. Student #2 receives the same assignment as Student #1. Now, move on to digit #47 and make an assignment for Student #3. Just keep doing this until you get 15 assignments to one classification. Anything remaining will have to be assigned to the other class.
