some are the following sets of quantum numbers are incorrect for 4d electron.which are a)4,3,2,+1/2 b)4,2,1,0 c)4,2,-2,+1/2 d)4,2,1,-1/2 in my opinion a,b,d are incorrect, but here says that b,c,d are incorrect.

thomaster (thomaster):

Oke the first number is the principal quantum number (n). That's the shell of an electron, in this case thats 4 because in 4d, 4= the shell number The second number is the azimuthal quantum number (l) which represents the subshell s=0, p=1, d=2, f=3 We have d here so the second number is 2 The third number is the magnetic quantum number (m) It's the orientation of the orbital of the electron. It can be -l to +l (l = the azimuthal quantum number) l in 4d = 2 so the magnetic number can be -2 -1 0 1 or 2 The fourth number is the spin quantum number (s) Tells something about the rotation of the electron around it's axis. It can be +1/2 (clockwise) or -1/2 (anticlockwise) Now which of the 4 options are incorrect? I can tell you 2 of them are correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a,b are incorrect.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in case of a the azimuthal is wrong, and in b the spin cant b 0,but the answers are b,c,d

thomaster (thomaster):

A and B are incorrect C and D are correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks, then the answers of my study mat is wrong.

thomaster (thomaster):

No problem :)
