Quick Question, is this reaction's charge balanced?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[2NO _{3} ^{-} + 8H ^{+} + 3Fe \rightarrow 2NO + 4H _{2}O + 3Fe ^{2+} \] Its a redox question and i think i have balanced the charges at +6 right on both sides?

OpenStudy (jfraser):

that's what I see

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks, so if it is \[2NO _{3} ^{-}\] its overall charge is -2? I thought there are just 2 N, not Oxygens?

OpenStudy (jfraser):

the coefficient in front multiplies everything in the formula. Each \(NO_3\) has a -1 charge, and the balanced reaction has 2 of them, making the total charge -2
