Can some please explain to me why group 7(periodic table) elements tend to form -1 ions

you should post this in chemistry.. basically, all atoms want an octet (8 electrons) in their valence shell because it makes them stable. Group 7 elements have 7 valence electrons so in order to achieve an octet, they gain 1 electron (don't forget they have a negative charge.)
