you are given circular seats with pillars at their centers, but the drawing is elliptic .. there is some drivel about being under the edge of the table by some amount, yet what does it mean to just touch when swiveled.

if you are given circular seats, then the would be positioned a radius away to "just barely touch (or miss) the table; which means that none of it is underneath the tabel

if 2 chairs are not to collide at any time, then they need to be a diameter away ... but what does any of this have to do with the drivel at the start of the problem? :/

whats worse, is if we assume the drawing of ellipses to be accurate; then there is no way there can be a portion under the table and still have the swivel "kiss" the table ....

yeah not sure about the circular thing either, i'm guessing they are trying to sound tricky with this problem but failing to sound sensible. I will keep re-reading it and your replies help a lot by giving me some insight on how others perceive this. ty.

yeah .. circular seat centered on a pillar that magically turn them into ellipses that can be inset under a tables edge and somehow noever touch on a full swivel .... maybe Rowling has a solution?
