Help! Fan and medal for answer. Calculate the density of the irregular-shaped solid for each trial. (Divide the mass of the solid by the volume of the solid calculated above.) Mass of solid: 39.41 grams Volume of Solid: 00.49 Please bear in mind that I need the correct number of sig figs in my answer. Thank you! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know how many significant figures there are in the given mass and volume?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats correct for the mass

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So would my answer need only two sig figs because of the dividing rule?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it would be: 39.41/00.49= 80.428... But my answer would be 80?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8.0*10^1 is how you should write it because 80 has only one sigfig

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But doesn't my answer need two?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

trailing zeroes arent significant either if there's no decimal point

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8.0*10^1 has 2 significant figures this kind of notation is better when dealing with significant figures

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But I guess you could also write 80. i think

OpenStudy (anonymous):

80 then decimal pt

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you get it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah. Thank you!
