There are several definitions for an acid, the most common on is the Bronsted-Lowry definition which states that an acid is something that can donate a proton \((H^+)\) and a base that which can accept it. An acidic solution is a solution that has a higher hydronium conc. than hydroxide conc. i.e. \([H_3O^+]>[OH^-]\), equivalently has a pH<7.
