Write the structure of the products for the oxidation of both methanol and ethanol. Name those products

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ganeshie8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oxidation of alcohols leads to carbonyl compounds

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it also depends upon reagent and structure of alcohol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for ethanol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the product for both is carbonyl compounds

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for the ethanol which equation is it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2nd attachment

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i know but there are to reactions shown

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont get it what happened when methanol and ethanol are oxidized

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Depending on how strong the oxidising reagent you will either get ketones, aldehydes or carboxylic acids But in general the following will happen primary alcohols--> aldehydes --> carboxylic acids secondary alcohols --> ketones (no further reaction) Methanol --- methanal----methanoic acid CH3OH ---> CH2O ----> HCO2H Ethanol ---> ethanal ---> ethanoic acid CH3CH2OH ----> CH3CHO ----> CH3CO2H

what about methanol and ethanol that are used for alcohols in automobies
