OpenStudy (anonymous):

. What gives carbon the ability to form chains that are almost unlimited in length?

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

it is mainly because of its valency.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Carbon has a special property of "Catenation" due to which it can bond to similar atoms and can form long chains.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

It's not just it's valency, because we would see chains of silicon as well, it's also because of it's small atomic size (radius).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yupx ..As far as i know,. silicon also has the property of Catenation but in carbon this property is greatest....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

agree @aaronq ?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

yeah, i agree they are formed although they are unstable under near UV light, another drawback of Si, is it's inability to form double or triple bonds with one another.
