it is mainly because of its valency.
Carbon has a special property of "Catenation" due to which it can bond to similar atoms and can form long chains.
It's not just it's valency, because we would see chains of silicon as well, it's also because of it's small atomic size (radius).
yupx ..As far as i know,. silicon also has the property of Catenation but in carbon this property is greatest....

yeah, i agree they are formed although they are unstable under near UV light, another drawback of Si, is it's inability to form double or triple bonds with one another.
