what effect does increasing the number of carbons have on the boiling point

OpenStudy (aaronq):

Think about the effect an increase in surface area (by increasing the number of carbons on a molecule) has on intermolecular forces (specifically van der waals forces).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

increasing number of carbons increases boiling point i think .... wt u say @petiteme ??

OpenStudy (petiteme):

i think you're right. :) increase of carbon atoms will increase the boiling point :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmmm..... :)

OpenStudy (petiteme):

:)

OpenStudy (aaronq):

it does ! by increasing the surface-area-contact between molecule, van der waals attractions between adjacent molecules increase and so does energy needed to separate these apart.
