OpenStudy (anonymous):

Atomic radius of Cu is greater than Cr but ionic radius of Cr2+ is greater than Cu2+ Why?

OpenStudy (jfraser):

compare the number of protons and electrons in each atom and ion. The difference in electron distributions makes all the difference

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't get it. 29 protons holding 27 electrons in Cu 2+ ion 3d9, 4s0 configuration 24 protons holding 22 electrons in Cr 2+ ion 3d4, 4s0 configuration

OpenStudy (jfraser):

that's exactly the reason. the imbalance of proton\electron pull of each nucleus determines which ion will have a larger radius

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What's the difference in the pull in this case? I need a logical explanation

OpenStudy (aaronq):

"What's the difference in the pull in this case?" If you want a quantitative answer, calculate \(Z_{eff}\) for valence e using slater's rules
