Easy College Algebra Question

OpenStudy (amtran_bus):

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

I've never heard land described as "parcel". |dw:1379279582037:dw| Try using Pythagoras's theorem.

OpenStudy (amtran_bus):

A^2 +B^2 =C^2 WIll do.

OpenStudy (amtran_bus):

Your A could be "w+70" and your B "W" right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

50 & 120

OpenStudy (amtran_bus):

@agent0smith , So far I have \[w^4+140w=12000\] @DSS , thanks! I just want to be sure I can do it.

OpenStudy (amtran_bus):

I do need help with the next step though.

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Subtract 12000 from both sides, then either factor it, or use the quadratic formula. but how did you get a w^4...?

OpenStudy (amtran_bus):

I said \[(w+70)^2 +(w)^2 =(130)^2\] I squared it from the get go.

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

So how'd you get w^4...? There shouldn't be one.

OpenStudy (amtran_bus):

When you carry out \[(w+70)^2\] you get \[w^2+140w+4900\]

OpenStudy (amtran_bus):

and then adding w^2 to that gave me w^4

OpenStudy (amtran_bus):

Oh. You root it.

OpenStudy (amtran_bus):

Is that it?

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

w^2 + w^2 = ...? It's not w^4, you're combining like terms.

OpenStudy (amtran_bus):

Got ya. Thank you.

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Make sure you post your work so I or someone can check it.

OpenStudy (amtran_bus):

I got 60 and 120. I said\[w^2 +140w-12000=0\] and factored.

OpenStudy (amtran_bus):

Well, wolfram alpha factored.

OpenStudy (amtran_bus):

I ment -200, not 120. My bad.

OpenStudy (amtran_bus):

But can it be -200?

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Your equation still isn't correct. Carefully expand out this: (w+70)^2 +(w)^2 =(130)^2

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

what's w+w equal to? 2w. What about w^2 + w^2?

OpenStudy (amtran_bus):

2w^2

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

see your error now? \[\Large w^2 +140w-12000=0\]

OpenStudy (amtran_bus):

Absolutely.

OpenStudy (amtran_bus):

50 and 120.

OpenStudy (amtran_bus):

Thank you so much.

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Yep, but note you should only use w=50, not w=-120. The width is 50, not -120. The length is 120, because w+70 = length. So 50+70 = 120 which is the length.
