can a molecule have 3 elements?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

sure

OpenStudy (aaronq):

e.g. HCN

there is this simple question that it is kinda tricky for me idk why. so there is two pictures and it says choose one that represents a molecule. one of them has 4 atoms from three different elements bonded together (3 different colors), and the other one has a plethora of atoms from two different elements bonded together (2 different colors) looking like a cube. what do you think?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

the one that looks like a cube is actually not a molecule, it's held together by ionic bonds.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

like NaCl

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you! is that true every time?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

there are some exceptions, like diamond.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and how do I know that it is not a molecule next time?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

lattices aren't molecules, so you generalize that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

gotcha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is \[Al(NO _{3})_{3} \] an ionic compound?
