Which part of an element does hybridization occur?

OpenStudy (matt101):

If you're referring to the hybridization of energy sublevels, then it occurs between the valence orbitals of the two bonding elements. For instance, if two elements are bonding, and one electron from the bond comes from an s orbital while the other comes from a p orbital, the two orbitals hybridize to form an sp sublevel of intermediate energy. An sp2 or sp3 sublevel may also result, depending on how many atoms with valence s orbitals the atom with valence p orbitals is bonding to.

it only occurs in the outer part which is shells and orbitals there are mainly 3 types of hyberdization sp,sp2,sp3
