DENSITY HELP :) A 5.00 cm cube of magnesium has a mass of 217.501 g. What is he density of magnesium metal?

OpenStudy (loser66):

hey, is it chemistry? but it's not that you have formula to find out the density? it says d = m/v

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes this is a chemistry question. Sorry I posted it in the wrong place. Its my first time on this website. I didn't mean to post it here.

OpenStudy (loser66):

ok, but you got it,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The formula?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know it is D=m/v, but I am unsure what to do from there. Since it is a cube do I first do 5.0 *5.0*5.0 to get the volume?

OpenStudy (loser66):

\[d= \frac{m}{v}\] where m is mass and v is volume. you have mass is 217.501 and v = 5.00

OpenStudy (loser66):

no, 5.00 \(cm^3\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok so I do not need to find the volume of anything? Ok so once I do that I got 43.50 g/cm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is that correct?

OpenStudy (loser66):

I don't calculate because it's quite simple but I think .. ok, let me do

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright thank you!

OpenStudy (loser66):

yes, but you should pay attention at significant figure.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh ok, so would it not be that? Since 43.50 is 4 digits?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The answer I got was = 43.5002 ---> 43.50?

OpenStudy (loser66):

I don't know, depend on the prof's requirement. to my prof, I have to get 4x10 , just 1 significant figure because 5.00 is 1 significant figure.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so if we did it like you said, what did you get as the answer? 43.5? or round up to 44?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you for your help, I got my answer!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Loser66 5.00 has 3 significant figures.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@desiretoinspirecindy Also note that units of your answer should be g/cm^3 not g/cm.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok THANK YOU! :)
