How come CrO3 is Chromium trixiodie ? Isnt the prefix tri used only for covalent bonds ?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

nope di for two O tri for 3 O tetra for 4 O penta for 5 O CO2- carbon dioxide similarly

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

P2O5- phosphorous pentaoxide :)

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

i dont know what it mean only for covalent bonds ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Covalent bonds are usually between a nonmetal and another nonmetal . An ionic bond is usually between a non metal and a metal . We use mono , di , tri , tetra ....etc. when naming elements in covalent bonds . If so , how come CrO3 is named chromium trioxide ? (Chromium is a metal oxygen is a non metal ) . If you have CrO3 how would you name it ? (We use IUPAC rules )

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

its called chromium trioxide these are prefixes and used in several naming things they re general u can use for anyhing it is not connected to only covalent bonds

When we have an ionic compound we use roman numerals , can you name it using roman numerals ? When i tried it didnt make sense

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

sodiumchloride

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

i didnt get u what u r saying

Ok here is the question in another way , Is CrO3 a possible compound ? Explain using the zero sum rule

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

yup its possible compound|dw:1379828019335:dw|
