How can you type what type of solid something is? Like Na2S and CH4 and C and Cr and CaO

thomaster (thomaster):

what do you mean with type of solid? something is solid or it's not solid

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Such as Na2S it is highly polar right. But I have to determine if it is Ionic crystal, metallic crystal, molecular solid, or covalent network solid

thomaster (thomaster):

first determine if your compound has ionic bonds or covalent bonds ionic = metal + nonmetal covalent = 2x nonmetal or nonmetal + metalloid

thomaster (thomaster):

sodium is a metal and sulfur is a nonmetal, so it's an ionic bond. So it's an ionic crystal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I thought it was polar because Na is 0.9 and S is 2.5 So the electronegativety charge is 1.6 and anything between .5 and 1.7 is polar

thomaster (thomaster):

That's true
