balance this equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[KMnO _{4}\rightarrow K _{2}O+MnO+O _{2}\]

thomaster (thomaster):

Check many of each element are on both sides Left: Right: K 1 K 2 Mn 1 Mn 1 O 4 O 4 So you start by adding a 2 before KMnO4 \(2KMnO _{4}\rightarrow K _{2}O+MnO+O _{2}\) Now check again: Left: Right: K 2 K 2 Mn 2 Mn 1 O 8 O 4 Now we equalize Mn by adding a 2 before MnO on the right side \(2KMnO _{4}\rightarrow K _{2}O+2MnO+O _{2}\) Following it so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes it is still not balanced.adding a two wont work in this case

thomaster (thomaster):

We check again: Left: Right: K 2 K 2 Mn 2 Mn 2 O 8 O 5 Now we have an odd number of oxygen atoms and we don't want that. So double everything \(4KMnO _{4}\rightarrow 2K _{2}O+4MnO+2O _{2}\) check again: Left: Right: K 4 K 4 Mn 4 Mn 4 O 16 O 10 Now we change the last O2 to make the number of oxygen atoms on the right side 16. Any idea what it should be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got the answer it is \[4KMnO _{4}\rightarrow 2K _{2}O+4MnO+5O _{2}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you

thomaster (thomaster):

That's correct :) Great job
