which is larger Br or I

OpenStudy (anonymous):

tell us the elements they stand for

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Br is bigger

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why Br is bigger than I

OpenStudy (anonymous):

o

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In comparison between Br and Iodine, it's a trend going down a group. Nuclear charge increases, shielding effect also increases because of an increase in a complete inner energy level. These two effects cancels out effectively . However, Iodine has more energy level than Br, this means that the distance between the nucleus and the electrons in the highest occupied energy level is greater. Thus Iodine is greater.

ur welcome :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i meant iodine lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no wait Br is bigger

OpenStudy (anonymous):

iodine is greater, br is bigger

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In comparison between Br- and Iodine, The effect of adding one electron has more influence on the radius than the effect of a whole new energy level. Thus Br- is bigger than Iodine.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

understand? Iodine is greater probably in energy, but Br is bigger

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer to ur question is Br

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank You

OpenStudy (aaronq):

Iodine has a larger radius because it has another whole level of electrons.
