OpenStudy (dls):

Why are metallic oxides basic & non metallic acidic?

OpenStudy (dls):

@chmvijay

OpenStudy (dls):

Also, how do u learn chemical eqns? :S

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

bcoz metal always tend to give electrons to the oxygen so electron density on O increases so this is Lewis basic :) and non metallic are more electronegative hence attracts the electron density from the Oxygen atom making is less electron density hence they are acidic :)

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

how do u learn chemical eqns? what exactly ?

OpenStudy (dls):

like \[\Huge I_2+HNO_3->\]

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

does it form HI ?

OpenStudy (dls):

umm no

OpenStudy (dls):

what will I2 oxidize to?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

that all u have to remember and have to put logic :) some time so reaction types u should know HNO3 is good oxidising agent right then it may be oxidation :) if it react with base then it will be salt formation reaction like that u have to judge

OpenStudy (dls):

so what will I2 oxidize to

OpenStudy (dls):

i mean only what will I2 oxidize to I?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

10 HNO3 + I2-->2 HIO3 + 10 NO2 + 4 H2O

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

nope NO3 get converted to NO2 in most of HNO3 used as reactant and water too

OpenStudy (dls):

but I2 is getting oxidized too

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

check oxidation state ?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

i just gave u example

OpenStudy (dls):

hmm

OpenStudy (dls):

only non metals get oxidized ? what about metals?
