A satellite moves in a circular orbit around the Earth at a speed of 6.3 km/s. Determine the satellite’s altitude above the surface of the Earth. Assume the Earth is a homogeneous sphere of radius 6370 km and mass 5.98 × 1024 kg. The value of the universal gravitational constant is 6.67259 × 10−11 N · m2/kg2. Answer in units of km

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can start from thinking that the gravitational force equals centrifugal force. Then you can solve distance from there.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

centrifugal force?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[F=\frac{ m*v ^{2} }{ r } \]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got 3.67953*10^6 but I think its wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you got the right answer except unit.. check the unit.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmm how do I change the units?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what you got is unit in meter. If you turn it into km, you have to divide it by 1000.
