Two trains leave stations 192 miles apart at the same time and travel toward each other. One train travels at 75 miles per hour while the other travels at 85 miles per hour. How long will it take for the two trains to meet? Do not do any rounding.

t=d/r

So we have a total distance of 192 miles, and train one travels at 75 miles an hour, train two at 85 miles an hour. Here is the setup for the equation. \[195 = 75x _{1} +85x _{2}\] x sub 1 is the first train x sub 2 is the second train we can add them together and assume that both of the trains are traveling a total of 160 miles an hour towards eachother. so now we have: \[195=160x\] where x is the time in hours.

so 160 is the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Look at the last equation, 160x= 195. You need to solve for x to find the time in hours. If it is a decimal, use fractions.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Or, because it is in time, express the answer in hours and minutes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

39/32

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now, what is 39/32 hours?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so am i suppose to divide?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 hour?
